Update: Actions to Take to Support Climate Research
After sharing a call to action yesterday regarding the closure of the Ocean Monitoring System, we have since learned that data that have been collected are not currently at risk. The NSF Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) has stated that data previously collected will be maintained, with funding available until 2028 - so while the decommissioning of these data-collection efforts is heartbreaking, this data is not a priority for rescue. If you are fired up and still eager to take action to protect climate research and federally-funded science, here are a few ways you can get involved today:
- Sign the petition from the Union of Concerned Scientists to protect NCAR, the National Center for Atmospheric Research
- A federal judge has temporarily blocked the NSF’s dismantling of NCAR - but signatures of support are still welcomed!
- Submit a comment on a proposed federal rule from the Office of Management and Budget that would give political appointees veto powers (The AGU has an excellent piece on the proposed rule and potential impacts). Comments are due by July 13.
- Bonus! The AGU has provided some suggested language AND a convenient form for anyone looking to submit feedback.
- Join the DataIndex Take Action Monthly Office Hours. Tomorrow (June 5), from 12-1pm Eastern, the topic will be “How to Write a Public Comment” - Register online and get ready to write your public comments!
- If you’re looking for something a little more creative - use the OOI data to hone your data skillz! What is the soundscape of changing ocean temperatures? Or translate a map of ocean currents into a color gradient. Find the beauty in this information - and if you need inspiration, check out Information is Beautiful.
- Bonus! If you’re willing to share, post your data viz on Bluesky or LinkedIn and tag the Data Rescue Project so we can reshare your work!
