Overview

The Data Rescue Project (hereafter "DRP") operates the website https://www.datarescueproject.org/ (the "Site") and https://portal.datarescueproject.org/ (the “Portal”). This Privacy Policy explains how DRP collects, uses, and protects information that it receives from Site visitors.

Information Collection

DRP collects minimal information from Site visitors. All website components, including the free and open source blogging software Ghost, are self-hosted on servers managed by DRP. The only personal information collected are email addresses for the optional email newsletter, which are processed through the bulk email provider Mailgun, when visitors voluntarily subscribe to the newsletter. We need to use Mailgun for newsletter sending because the newsletter function of Ghost requires the use of Mailgun.

DRP uses self-hosted Umami for collecting aggregated web analytics on both the Site and the Portal. Umami collects page views, referrer URLs, browsers, operating systems, device types, and country of origin. Umami does not collect any personally identifiable information and anonymizes all data collected. Users cannot be identified and are never tracked across websites. Umami is GDPR compliant. For more information, please refer to Umami’s FAQ.

Use of Information

Email addresses collected through the newsletter subscription are used solely for sending updates about DRP. DRP does not sell, rent this information with third parties. Email addresses are only shared with Mailgun for the purpose of sending the emails.

Information collected via Umami is used for showing DRP’s impact to current and potential funders.

Data Security

DRP implements reasonable security measures to protect the information it collects. The Site and all its components are self-hosted and maintained with appropriate technical safeguards.

In the event of a security incident, such as a DDOS attack, DRP may use Cloudflare proxy services to maintain web services. In that case, visitor traffic would pass through Cloudflare’s servers and be processed according to their privacy policy.

Third-Party Services

The newsletter function is operated through Mailgun, which processes email addresses for the distribution of our newsletter. Please refer to Mailgun's privacy policy for information about their data handling practices.

Changes to Privacy Policy

DRP may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Subscribers will be notified of any material changes via email.
